We wanted to help clear up a common misconception about evolution in hopes of furthering science today. Evolution is a multifaceted term that is a theory, a fact, and a process all rolled into one.

Evolution as a Theory: In science, a theory isn't just a hunch – it's a well-established explanation supported by evidence and repeated observation. The theory of evolution explains how species change over time. It's supported by significant evidence from multiple disciplines including fossils, genetics, and observations of living creatures. One common misconception is that a scientific theory isn't as strong as a scientific law. To be clear: laws describe things we observe in nature (i.e. the speed of light) while theories provide explanations for the observed behavior.

Evolution as a Fact: Evolution is also a scientific fact. It's backed by a wealth of evidence that shows species have changed and diversified over millions of years. Fossils provide a rich record of ancient life forms, showcasing the transitions and adaptations that various organisms have undergone over millions of years. Additionally, DNA studies unveil intricate connections between different species, offering a molecular blueprint that supports the interconnectedness of all life on Earth. These pieces of evidence, combined with observations of natural selection in action and the convergence of findings from paleontology, genetics, embryology, and comparative anatomy, collectively form a robust body of data that overwhelmingly substantiates the theory of evolution. The evidence for evolution is so robust that it's accepted by the scientific community worldwide as a fact.

Evolution as a Process: Evolution is an ongoing process that occurs through natural selection. Here's how it works: living organisms have variations due to genetic mutations. Some of these variations help organisms survive and reproduce better in their environment. Over time, these beneficial traits become more common in a population. This process, called natural selection, leads to the gradual changes in species we observe.

Summary: evolution is a theory that explains how species change, a fact based on solid evidence, and a process we continue to observe over time that drives the diversity of life on our planet.
